As instructed by the Lord, Hanuman enters the Asoka park and meets Sita. He expresses his desire to kill all rakshasis who have been tormenting Sita. But Sita, the very incarnation of maternal love, pardons the conduct of the rakshasis. Sita bathes and decorates herself and goes in a palanquin to Rama’s camp. Rama tells Sita, “I have discharged my duty as a kshatriya by killing Ravana and recovering you. As you have lived so long at the mercy of Ravana, it is not appropriate for me to take you back as my wife. So you must go elsewhere.” Heart broken, Sita orders Lakshmana to create a pyre and light it up. With a heavy heart, Lakshmana does so. After circumambulating Sri Rama, she submits herself to the flames. Now all gods including Brahma and Siva appear before Rama. Agni Deva declares that Sita is chaste and hands her over to Rama. Rama is only too happy to accept her back. The omniscient Lord reveals that the real reason for the ordeal was to convince the subjects of Sita’s purity.
