Rama and Lakshmana return to the asrama only to find that the worst has happened. Rama, mad with grief, wanders through the forest asking trees and animals if they have seen his soul mate. Then the two brothers come across the brave king of the eagles, Jatayu, who is struggling to keep his body and soul together. With much difficulty, Jatayu describes in detail what has happened. As Rama listens, tears roll down his cheeks. He embraces Jatayu, and Jatayu consoles him with words of encouragement. At last, Jatayu passes away. Rama and Lakshmana regard Jatayu as Dasaratha himself and perform obsequies for the departed soul.
