Dasaratha, with the sanction of the royal court, decides to appoint Sri Rama as his yuvaraja. On the eve of the anointment Rama and Sita fast and sleep on darbha grass spread on the floor. Meanwhile, Manthara begins her evil mission of corrupting Queen Kaikeyi. Initially, Kaikeyi is elated on hearing the news of Rama’s abhisheka. But Manthara’s evil counsel makes sure that Kaikeyi’s affection for Rama is dislodged from her mind. Kaikeyi asks Dasaratha for the two boons that he promised to fulfil long ago. The first demand is that Bharata should be anointed yuvaraja, and not Rama. The other demand is that Rama should be banished from Ayodhya for fourteen years. Poor Dasaratha, bound by his own word, is forced to yield. When Rama, the dutiful son, comes to know about these developments, he wants his father to keep his word at any cost. Rama prepares to go to Dandaka forest. Sita and Lakshmana decide to accompany him.
