Wearing bark garments Rama, Sita and Lakshmana leave for the woods in a chariot driven by Sumantra. The subjects of Ayodhya come to know about the tragedy that has befallen Rama. Festive mood in the whole city gives way to mourning. The crowds in the street try to hinder the progress of the chariot. Sri Rama stops the chariot and tells the people to transfer the love they have for him to Bharata. All of them spend their night on the bank of River Tamasa. Long before dawn when the subjects of Ayodhya are fast asleep Sri Rama leaves for the forest.
