Brahmarshi Viswamitra visits Dasaratha’s court one day. The king offers all respects to the great sage and promises to carry out any orders that the sage may give. Viswamitra asks Dasaratha to send Rama along with him to defeat demons involved in harming holy men and disrupting yagas. Though hesitant initially, the king finally sends Rama and Lakshmana with the sage. Viswamitra and the two princes reach Dandaka forest. This forest was once a well-peopled country. The destructive activities of Tataka and her son Maricha turned the country into a terrible forest that it now is. Tataka and Maricha were yakshas, once, and by the curse of the great Sage Agastya they got transformed into monsters. Though killing a woman is forbidden by the sastras, Viswamitra exhorts Rama to eliminate Tataka for general welfare. After a ferocious battle, Rama slays the monster. The celestial beings celebrate the victory of Rama. Elated at the turn of events, Viswamitra gives divine arrows to Rama and teaches him their use, control and recall. As the sage starts performing the yaga, Maricha, Subahu and other rakshasas prepare to disrupt it. By shooting Manavastra Sri Rama hurls Maricha, the son of Tataka, into the sea. Rama’s Agneyastra kills Subahu. Viswamitra is thus able to complete the yaga.
