Ravana consults the members of his court on what to do next. Prahasta, Durmukha, Vajradamshtra, Nikumbha and others flatter their king and belittle Sri Rama. Vibhishana, the very embodiment of righteousness and piety, alone has the guts to censure the lord of Lanka. Vibhishana asks Ravana to repent, restore Vaidehi to the son of Dasaratha and seek pardon of Rama. Ravana loses his temper and calls Vibhishana a traitor. So Vibhishana decides to join the side of dharma in the imminent war between Rama and Ravana. The noble rakshasa gives up everything he has and leaves Lanka. Along with four like-minded rakshasas, he seeks asylum with Rama. Sugriva, Angada, Jambavan and other vanaras are suspicious of the motives of Ravana’s brother. But Hanuman argues in his favour. Finally Lord Rama, who is ‘saranagata vatsala’, grants refuge to him. Vibhishana is then anointed king of Lanka by Sugriva and Lakshmana. As ‘saranagati’ (absolute surrender to the Lord) is the essence of Vaishnavism, many Vaishnavites consider ‘Vibhishana saranagati’ as the soul of the Ramayana.
